This course is designed to provide the delegates with the knowledge and competencies required to carry out gas testing of atmospheres in confined spaces for pre-entry and on an ongoing basis. To provide those personnel preparing for a gas tester role with the knowledge to safely conduct gas tests for oxygen levels, and flammable and toxic gases. In addition, this course also equips the delegates with the knowledge necessary to conduct gas testing within confined spaces and an awareness of associated confined space hazards.
Selection, care and use of PPE& RPE for gas testing.
Carrying out a suitable and sufficient Risk assessments.
Gases and their hazards.
Confined Space Criteria.
Types of fixed, portable and personal monitors.
Statutory requirements (HASAWA, Confined Space Regulations, ACOP).
Implications of document (Workplace Exposure Limits).
Hazards associated with toxic, flammable and oxygen deficient/enriched atmospheres.
Using safe systems of work–SSW Demonstrate you can correctly identify the appropriate safe systems of work needed and can use them, including the Permit to Work system-(including Confined Space Entry and PTW procedures; using observers to raise the alarm and initiate emergency response and including PTW of Hot Work procedures; and using observers to raise the alarm and initiate emergency response).
Working with permits, ICCs and entry certificates.
The implications of applicable procedures Carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment after interpreting operational requirements The hazards of operations within an oxygen deficient, toxic or flammable environment What the confined space criteria are The acceptable levels of another flammable and toxic gases including H2S, SO2, CO, CO2, and alkanes that are normally vapour at ambient conditions minimal & maximum and interpretation in order to authorize or reject the activity post gas testing in enclosed/opened spaces
Behavior of different gases(Flammable and toxic gases).
The range and frequency of tests.
Carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment after interpreting operational requirements Demonstrate you can correctly identify the appropriate safe systems of work needed and can use them, including the Permit to Work system Demonstrate you can select and use the correct PPE and RPE before a gas testing operation Demonstrate you can carry out gas detector pre-start checks correctly Demonstrate you can perform gas tests in the correct sequence
Range and frequency of tests and acceptable limits.
