Quality Assurance is the establishment of a program to guarantee the desired quality level of a product from raw materials through fabrication, final assembly and delivery to the customer.
Quality Control comprises the physical and administrative actions required to ensure compliance with the Quality Assurance program. These functions may include NDT and Inspection at appropriate points in the manufacturing cycle.
The purpose of NEST's Quality Program is to ensure that the various services provided by the Company are properly developed, performed, controlled and documented.
The NEST Quality Program, which consists of the Quality Manual and Qualification and Certification Procedures, is regularly reviewed and monitored to ensure that the highest standards are maintained at every stage of project execution.
Although designed for in-house use the NEST Quality Program is readily adapted to meet the specific needs of individual clients
The main objective of this service is to make available to industry an experienced, qualified and reliable manpower resource.
This solution to manning problems is of special importance to clients during periods of major construction activity. It has the advantage that NEST Construction Supervisors may be deployed for short or longer term assignments as project requirements dictate and is therefore very cost-effective.
The utilization of NEST engineers and supervisors, whose expertise covers a wide range of disciplines, can be of particular benefit at critical phases of a project when targets are having to be reviewed and extra supervision is needed to expedite the work programme.
PRE & POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT
In addition to being a reputable provider of NDT and Inspection services NEST has the capability to undertake the Pre and Post Weld Heat Treatment of welded components using electrical heating elements and insulating blankets.
As the agent for a major manufacturer of Heat Treatment equipment and consumables, NEST is in an ideal position to provide a prompt and cost-effective service. The full range of pipe diameters as well as small pressure vessels, in both carbon and alloy steels, can be accommodated
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING SERVICES
The general definition of Non Destructive Testing is an examination, test, or evaluation, performed on any type of test object; without changing or altering that object in any way, in order to determine the absence or presence of discontinuities that may have an effect on the usefulness or serviceability of that object. In other words, NDT is testing and evaluating materials, without causing damage or destruction to the material. For example, the testing of a mechanical component for strength, without weakening the component, or making the component useless.
PIPELINE RADIOGRAPHY CRAWLER
The new X-ray Pipeline Crawler is suitable for both onshore and offshore working environments.
In normal configuration it can be operated in pipe diameters from 510 mm (20") to 1420 mm (56"), but can easily be reconfigured to work in the range of pipe sizes from 400 mm (16") up to 1830 mm (72").
The crawler consists of lightweight modules that can be easily transported to the pipe end and quickly assembled. The total weight of the assembled crawler is significantly less than other similar sized models.
The unit features full remote control operation of the motor, park and expose modes from outside the pipeline. Once loaded into the open end of the pipe, the crawler is completely self contained and does not need any external connections.
Depending on operating conditions, the crawler can typically radiograph 100 welds in 24" pipe with a 15 mm wall thickness, including motoring the 100 pipe lengths, before the battery pack needs changing.
Testing of materials for their internal discontinuities and anomalies by passing gamma radiation emitted from artificially produced radioactive isotopes. The radiation transmitted through the material differs in intensity depending on the characteristics of the discontinuities present inside the material. The transmitted radiation is allowed to be recorded in a photographic film, which acts as a permanent record of discontinuities present in the material. The film so produced is interpreted and evaluated by the specially trained personnel to take a decision on the condition of the material be changed without removing the crawler from the pipeline
MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING
The test sample is magnetized, and fine ferromagnetic particles are applied to the surface. These ferromagnetic particles align along discontinuities, both at the surface, and at some subsurface flaws. The method is easy to carry out and the materials required are inexpensive. The method is highly sensitive and fast. Ferromagnetic materials may only be tested in this way
Liquid penetrate testing, a nondestructive means of locating and determining the severity of surface discontinuities in materials, is based upon capillary action. The ultimate success of liquid penetrate testing depends upon the visibility of indications. To ensure utmost visibility, the liquid penetrate contains either a colored dye which is easily seen in white light, or a fluorescent dye visible under black (ultraviolet) light. Because of the basic characteristics and ease of use of liquid penetrate testing; it is used to test a variety of both metallic and nonmetallic materials such as welds, forgings, castings, plastics, ceramics, etc.
ULTRASONIC TESTING SERVICES
High frequency sound pulses are emitted from a transducer above a sample. The sound waves propagate through the sample, and reflect at interfaces. The reflected waves are monitored using a detector above the sample. The thickness of the sample, and the depth and type of flaw can be ascertained using this method. The method can be applied to most materials if sound transmission is good. Quick high sensitive results are obtained. The testing is carried out from one side of the sample only. Complex shapes cannot be tested using this method.
Phased Array Ultrasonic Inspection - (PAUT)
Principle of operation of phased array (PA). The PA probe consists of many small elements, each of which can be pulsed separately. In the figure the element on the right is pulsed first, and emits a pressure wave that spreads out like a ripple on a pond (largest semicircle). The second to right element is pulsed next, and emits a ripple that is slightly smaller than the first because it was started later. The process continues down the line until all the elements have been pulsed. The multiple waves add up to one single wave front travelling at a set angle. In other words, the beam angle can be set just by programming the pulse timings.
Weld examination by phased array. TOP: The phased array probe emits a series of beams to flood the weld with sound. BOTTOM: The flaw in the weld appears as a red indication on the instrument screen.
Eddy Current Testing Methods - (ET):
Eddy Current tube testing is a means of checking the condition of tubes in the condenser and evaporator sections of a chiller. An electronic probe is inserted in each tube at the end of a tube bundle and pushed through the entire length of the tube. The information fed back from the probe reveals abnormal tube wear or tube defects..
The primary purpose of this new test method is to detect and determine the depth of crack-like damage in the gauge corner. One cause for this is the so-called rolling contact fatigue of the rail material due to high speeds and large axle loads.
The new test method is based on the eddy current principle.
The eddy current test method is based on the principles of magnetic induction. An alternating magnetic field is produced by the test sensor which induces electrical eddy currents in a test object. Direct contact between the sensor and the test object is not necessary. When inhomogenities or damage are found, the flux of the eddy current field is effected. These changes are measured with the test sensor.
